Golf Courses of Ayrshire
Coodham is located a short drive from Scotland’s famous west coast golf courses. It boasts close proximity to Barassie, Belleisle and West Kilbride. Nearby Open Qualifying courses Irvine Bogside, Glasgow Gailes and Western Gailes are considered by many to be among the finest golf courses in Scotland. And there are three championship courses; Prestwick, the original Open course, with its special connection to Coodham, Royal Troon which hosted the Open in 2004 and Turnberry which is to host the Open in 2009.
Coodham house takes its own place in golfing history. Colonel James Ogilvie Fairlie, son of the initial owners, was the founder of the inaugural British Open Golf Championships. On arriving to live at Coodham he set about rectifying the problem of no golfing in the area. As a result he persuaded the Earl of Eglington to release some ground at Prestwick for the construction of a new links golf course. He also invited the professional at St Andrews' golf course, Old Tom Morris, to design the course, which held its first tournament in 1857. In 1860 Colonel Fairlie orchestrated the first professional championship in order to decide the title of the best professional golfer in Britain. The succeeding year, the event was made open to all the world, which it still is today.
